The lithograph “Nahual” emerged from a collaboration between Belin and Oaxacan artist Manuel Escobar. In this work, Escobar contributes a pre-Hispanic figure rich in symbolism and deeply rooted in the Mesoamerican worldview, while Belin incorporates elements of his own realistic visual language, creating a dialogue between two distinct artistic universes.
In Mesoamerican tradition, the term Nahual refers to the spiritual bond between a human being and their protective animal — a guardian that connects the earthly world with the spiritual realm. Through the medium of stone lithography, both artists merge their visions, creating a work that honours the cultural roots of Oaxaca while bringing them into a contemporary context.
“Nahual” is a unique lithograph within Belin’s body of work, not only because of its symbolic power, but also because of the significance of a collaboration that brings together different ways of understanding art and memory.
